Jacob and Beresh went to Russia and joined the Communist party where they were promised free education. Some time later, during Stalin's reign, they were arrested and imprisoned. Beresh had a wife. Beresh was murdered by the Communists and Jacob was put in solitary confinement in the 'Gulags' of Siberia. He spent 9 years there/ He had lost one leg by saving a woman from an oncoming train and had a wooden prosthetic. This threatened his survival in prison. Chess saved his life.
