About Jacques Bissonnette dit Dechaumaux

Jacques2 Bissonnette (Jean1) was born about 1645 in La Chapelle Peleau, Lucon, Poitou, France, and died 28 Dec 1723 in Varennes, Verchères, QC. He married Marguerite Collet 19 Nov 1670 in Boucherville, Chambly, QC (ct 10, Frerot), daughter of Eustache Collet and Marie Fournier. She was born about 1653 in La Chapelle Peleau, Lucon, Poitou, France, and died 11 Jun 1730 in Varennes, Verchères, QC.

Notes for Jacques Bissonnette: Jacques was born about 1645 in La Chapelle-Peleau (near Les Sables d'Olonne, diocese of Lucon), Poitou, the son of Jean Bissonnet and Marie Goupillois. He enlisted at La Rochelle 31 March 1665, at which time he claimed to be from La Flotte, lie de Re. Jacques can be found in the 1666 census as the servant of Louis Tétreau at Trois Rivières. In the 1681 census, he can be found in Varennes on the southern bank in the east of Montréal and is listed as being 36 years old. Sadly, six-year-old Jacques was buried 18 November 1684 at Boucherville. Marie-Marguerite was baptized 11 September 1687, but was buried only three days later. On 26 September 1687, two-year-old Jacques was buried and on 27 November 15-year-old Pierre was laid to rest - all victims of the smallpox or "purple fever" epidemic that was ravaging the colony. Michel was baptized 05 March 1689, but was buried 01 October that year at Boucherville. The first 13 of their children were born in Varennes and baptized at Boucherville. Jacques Bissonnet dit Dechaumaux died 28 November 1723 and was buried the same day at Varennes. Without the usual one day wait, he may have been the victim of a contagious disease.
