"The exilarch at Babylon was always a direct descendant of King David, and ruled over the Jewish people in exile. Jewish genealogists state that all in Normandy who bear the name David are descendants of the old Jewish family of David which descends from Theodoric David. The Jewish people had been established in France since Roman times, and there had even been a Jewish principality at Narbonne. However, after the settlement of the Norse in Normandy, and their conversion to the Christian faith, the Jews of Normandy were forced to convert or leave the Duchy. The Jews were driven out of Normandy in 1185 by Duke Philip Augustus, and those who remained were baptized into the Catholic faith. It would seem that Julien de St Etienne David was baptized as a child by his father, and that with him the Christian line of the David family originates.".
