About Jacques Duguay dit Marentette

Notes

THE FIRST OF OUR DUGUAY:

   A DOCTOR FROM BURGUNDY

C omme it is often the case, Duguay of North America, although raising it
even patronym are different stocks, and some retain the epellation Dugué. It seems that, in any event, this name probably rises owing to the fact that those which chose it or which saw it allotting lived close to a ford. It would however not be thus in the case of Duguet, which would rather carry the nickname of a trade, that of guettor: posted in a tower of guet, this one was to announce the dangers, of which approach of enemies or reddish glow of some conflagration.
First Duguay which founded a hearth in News-France prénommait Jacques. Wire of Michel and Catherine Lobret, it was originating in Semur-in-Auxois, one of most picturesque and more attaching old cities of Burgundy, whose collegial Our-Lady is also one of the most remarkable Gothic buildings of this old province. As one undertook the construction of this monument little before the medium of XIIIe century, it is in the vault of the baptismal font, going back to 1540, that regenerating water ran on the face of Jacques.
This one, which was born about 1647, was a surgeon, in that having chosen the profession of his/her father. Semur-in-Auxois is in the district of Montbard, in the heart of an area which provided to News-France all the technicians in charge of the startup of our first heavy industry, the forging mills of Saint-Maurice. We thus do not astonish that it is with the Three-Rivers, November 21, 1672, little after its arrival, that it marries Jeanne Beaudry, girl of Urbain and Madeleine Boucher. The day before, in front of the notary Ameau, the father-in-law had begun to pour a dowry of 300 pounds and to place the young couple during one year.
Jacques Duguay exerted his medical profession to the Three-Rivers during beyond one half-century and was the only surgeon there during many years. He undoubtedly looked after there the brother Didace (Claude Pelletier), whose cause in beatification was introduced since 1713, because he returned several testimonys in support of people who stated to be cured by the intercession of our first miracle-worker.
The Duguay/Beaudry couple had 12 children including six wire. Four of those died in low age or apparently without founding a hearth. Jacques married Marie-Louise Lemaître with the Three-Rivers in 1722 (3 wire and 2 girls); Maurice, who was known as Duplessis, there founded a hearth five years later with Marie-madeleine Leclerc (4 wire and 2 girls). Of the six girls of this couple, four took husband: Marie-madeleine married Maurice Cardin in 1695; Marguerite, Jacques Godé in 1698; Claire, Louis Lemaître (brother of Marie-Louise) in 1717; and Jeanne, Cardinal Jacques in 1715.
Become widowed, Jacques Duguay contracted one second union, in 1709, with Anne Baillargeon, widow of Jean Polton, but this marriage remained without posterity. It died at age the 80 years and one buried it in the cemetery of the hospital of the Ursulines, with the Three-Rivers.
If we count thousands of Duguay in North America (from which some 600 subscribers of this name in only the bottin telephone of Montreal), we thus must primarily to Jacques Duguay, this doctor Burgundian who came to us from Saumur-in-Auxois.
