About Jakob Koppel
Author: Heidemarie Leins
Translator: Jeffrey E. Meyerson
Except from the text of the book: Jüdische Persönlichkeiten im Kraichgau, Michael Heitz & Bernd Röcker, editors (2013).
For about three generations the Koppel Family operated a horse and cattle trade business in Bretten. The founder of the business was Jacob Koppel, born on 20 September 1828, the son of Judah Koppel and Babette Lippmann in Menzingen. In the year 1856, Jacob married Karoline Gutmann of Gemmingen, with whom he had 15 children. He took the cattle from his father Judah, who died in 1876.
The entry shown in the Brettener Bürgerliste in 1876 was that Jacob Koppel was a professional trader. Jacob Koppel and his family relocated the business from Menzingen to Bretten due economic considerations. The good business traffic in Bretten, particularly the rail link, was an important prerequisite for the sale of goods and animals, and therefore many Jewish cattle dealers moved to the Bretten area. In 1900 this area was in the present-day district of Karlsruhe. About half of the village’s Jews were in the cattle trade. Often cattle were even delivered to Paris. This was a much larger the Sales territory for agricultural animals, especially for horses. It included the North Baden region, and also the Alsace, Lorraine, the Palatinate and Hesse. The regional significance of the Brettener cattle market in the 19th and early 20th centuries is illustrated by a comparison with other markets...
...Isidor and Joseph were the owners of the business after the death of their father. From the year 1906, the operation was called "Jacob Koppel & Söhne OHG".
The firm developed as one of the biggest "fat cattle and horses traders" in the region, even next to a plant in Karlsruhe and one operating in Bad Cannstatt, they were one of the biggest fat cattle and horses traders in the German south-west. Every year up to 1,000 horses and 800 fat cattle were sold. The horses and cows came not only from the local area, and partly from afar, including East Prussia, from Denmark, Holland, Sweden and Hungary.
