About Jakob Muretich

Birthdate might be June 15, 1875

ACCIDENT NO. 1- October 13, 1910 - Jacob Muretich, South Hecla Branch, C.&H. Jacob Muretich, an Austrian timber-boss, employed by the C.&H. Co., in No. 9 shaft, South Hecla, met his death on this date by a fall of vein-rock causing a fracture at base of the skull. He died in the hospital a few minutes after reaching there.

An inquest was conducted by Justice Fisher over his body. The following witnesses were examined:

Anton Dreyer: "I am a track-fixer. My partner and I were coming in with the car at the 63d level, No. 9 and 10 and Muretich was just ready to hoist up the timber. He called to me not to stand in front of the car as the tongs might slip off. So I went over to the hanging side where he was. When they hoisted, I heard a crack and stooped down. When I got up again, I looked for Jacob and found him under the rock. The rock was vein, from the hanging side. It did not fall very far. He was standing right in front of it, in the level. I had not the least thought of any danger there. Had never heard any thing fall there before."

Above testimony corroborated by Wm. Kernick.

Chas. Olson: "I was running the hoisting engine near the place where accident happened. Just before I started to hoist, Muretich had his lamp in his hand ready to give the signal; then I saw another fellow coming toward me with his lamp so I watched him for the signal. I got the signal and started to hoist and then got the signal to stop. Then I saw a crowd gathering in one place and a man told me the timber-boss was killed. I went over and saw him, then notified the Captain."

Verdict: "We, the jury, find that Jacob Muretich, came to his death on the 13th day of October, 1910, in the 63d level of No. 9 shaft, South Hecla Branch of C.&H. Mine, by being struck by vein-rock."

TIMBERMAN MEETS DEATH IN NO. 9 SHAFT, SOUTH HECLA

Jake Moredich, aged 32 years, a resident of Swedetown, was accidentally killed about 11:30 a.m. this morning while following his occupation as a member of a timber gang, in No. 9 shaft, South Hecla branch of the C.&H. mine. Particulars of the accident cannot be learned until the inquest is conducted this afternoon. It is believed, however, that Moredich was struck by fallling rock, as the injuries to his face and head, which caused his death five minutes after he was admitted to the C.&H. hospital, seems to lead to this belief.
The decedent was a married man and is survived by a wife and five children. He was a member of the St. Joseph's and St. John Slovenian societies, members of whom will attend the funeral.
The funeral services will take place Saturday of Sunday, final arrangements not yet being complete. Services will be held at the St.Joseph's church, and interment in Lake View.
Coroner William Fisher has been notified of the accident. A jury has been impanelled, and the inquest will be confucted at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

MURETICH INQUEST HELD.

Calumet & Hecla Timberman struck on head by falling rock.

Coroner William Fisher held an inquest yesterday afternoon to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of the late Jacob Muretich, who was killed yesterday morning while at work at the 63rd level of No. 9 shaft of the South Hecla branch of the C.&H. mine. Death was the result of the fall of a piece of vein rock. According to the evidence, Muretich, who was foreman of the timbergang, went into the level to ascertain whether the "catches" being used to hoist a piece of timber would hold. While standing there, a piece of rock became dislodged and crashing down struck the decedent on the head, fracturing his skull.

FATHER DEAD; MOTHER ILL.

Five little tots taken to Catholic Mission at Assinins.

Rev. Fr. Medin, of St. John's Croatian church of Calumet, and Lucas Stefanic, left yesterday afternoon for Catholic mission at Assinins, accompanied by five fatherless tots, where they will be cared for until other provisions can be made for them.
The little ones are the children of the late Jacob Muretich, who was killed in one of the local mines last fall. The mother has become insane since the death of her husband, and is now an inmate at the upper peninsula hospital at Newberry. Just previous to being taken to the hospital she gave birth to a son, now four months old. This child is being cared for in a Red Jacket home.
