About Jakob Thorsch
He worked in Uh Brod on an Estate as a young man before he began working in Tovacov as manager of the sugar beet factory for Sir David Gutmann.
Rudolf Guttman the brother of David had a wife Marianne. She is mentioned in the award winning memoir "The Hare with the amber Eyes" on page 209. The memoir written by Edmund de Waal is of his Ephrussi family a wealthy Jewish banking family with branches in Paris and Vienna originating in Odessa where they began as grain traders. The Guttman brothers were friends of the Ephrussis in Vienna and both had mansions on the Ringstrasse. the Gutmans were prominent in the Jewish community and they originated from Moravia in a town not far from Boskovice where Jacob THORSCH managed a sugar beet factory of David Guttman. The factory used the same train line as that built to transport the coal frm the northern Moravian mines owned by the Gutmans.
Page 284 of the "Hare with the amber eyes" refers to the amnesty given by the post war Austrian Government to Nazi party members, SS and Gestapo. Page 232 deals with the assassination of Dolfus the Austrian Chancellor. Page 239 describes how many Austrian Jews fled to Czechoslovakia as my father, his first wife and his mother did. The ephrussi fmaily was dispossessed of their wealth and their daughter de waal's mother fled to england where she married an Anglican priest.
Jakob THORSCH died in the mental hospital at Gugging which is near the town of Klosterneuberg not far from Vienna. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Vienna at Gate 4.
