About James Andrew Pierce, Sr.

message on Lumpkin Family genealogy forum 5 Feb 2001 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/lumpkin/messages/383.html:

letter from ms Jamie Koach (85 years old) 1001 N Lynn Gladewater Tx 75647 --She Writes:"Regarding marriage and descendants of James Andrew (J.A.) Pierce (born) March 4, 1853, Lincoln Co NC (died) April 28, 1910, Atlanta Tx and Susan Helen Lumpkin (born) Nov 13, 1839, Rome, Floyd Co GA (died) Dec 30, 1924, Atlanta TX Daughter of George & Mary Witcher Lumpkin.

"James Andrew Pierce was in the civil war and Joined at Henderson TX. There has been a story told that the family believed all their lives and never questioned it. Seems that JA's Parents were killed by the Indians and he and a brother were captured by the Indians. Soon as JA could he escaped. The Brother stayed. No one knows JA's parent's names or the name of his brother. I had my degree of Indian blood checked. Don't know how true this is, but was told JA Pierce was a half Breed. Said he was from Chief Bowl Tribe. I did find a little on Chief Bowl. General Houston stationed at Gonzalez wrote Colonel Bowl Chief of the Cherokee nation in 1836, "You will get your land as it was promised in our treaty and you and all my red brothers may rest satisfied that I will always hold you by the hand and look to you as a brother and treat you as such." Of course, this didn't happen and Chief Bowl was killed. I believe in hunches. If by chance my G. Grnd. father is connected to this tribe he may have made up the story about the Indians to cover up him being part Indian because back in the 1800's they killed Indians for no reason. Interesting story but I probably don't have a leg to stand on. If you happen to run across anything of help will greatly appreciate it. Sorry, I don't have a computer so write by us postal mail.
