. James Marchant was a Beadle earlier, a term referring to an inferior parish officer appointed to keep order in church, punish petty offenders, give notices of vestry meetings and so on. In the nineteenth century, as depicted in Dickens' novels, the Beadle held a position of considerable power over the poor, who were committed as destitute to live in the Poor House. This could include pregnant women who were about to give birth or the homeless or orphans & this power could be easily abused. Instead of being compassionately treated, such waifs & strays were roughly handled, funds intended for their upkeep were siphoned off for the Beadles' personal expenses. Hopefully, James Marchant was not at all like these literary characters. Without a second Christian name, it is often difficult to decide which census profile is the one belonging to the Marchants, from whom Kate Caroline is descended. I have assumed that James Marchant would be born in Freshford, Somerset & may have died there too. On this particular grave stone slab, we know that William Lavington Marchant, son of the above George Marchant, who departed this life January 6th 1837 aged 79, emigrated to Australia on the Ship HMS Fairlie, arriving in Adelaide, South Australia in 1840 where he is described on the gravestone as dying on August 10th 1840 aged 40. Most of the others died at Freshford. The grave stone slab does not give the birth date of these 10 people but only their death dates & ages, but Geoffrey Marchant Harrison had added their birth years next to each person.
