James Brown was born in England and came to America with his parents, Chad and Elizabeth Brown in 1638. He died at Newport about 1683. He married at Newport Elizabeth Carr about 1670. She was the daughter of Robert Carr, who was born in London and was admitted a freeman in 1671. She died 8 Dec 1697. She married second, Samuel Gardiner by whom she had a son, Samuel and four daughters, Elizabeth, Martha, Patience and Sarah Gardiner.
According to the Russell Genealogy and Austin's Dictionary, the time of birth of james Brown, second son of Chad and Elizabeth is not known. He lived in newport and was a cooper. On 31 Dec 1672, he and his wife, Elizabeth, sold the home lot of his father, Chad Brown, deceased to Daniel Abbot, of Providence, reserving a portion twenty feet square withnin the orchard, where his parents were buried. The children of James Brown and Elizabeth Carr were:
1. John born 1671, died in Newport 20 Oct 1731. He held the title Captain from 1709, and was frequently Deputy between 1706-26. On committee to rebuild Fort Ann 1721. it was voted "to deliver to Captain John Brown, at the fort, the great gus on board the brigantine Two Brothers." He married Elizabeth, daughter of Gov John and Mary (Clarke) Cranston. (Afterh Capt. Brown's death, his widow married Rev. John Honeyman, rector of Trinity Church, Newport.) John and Elizabeth Brown had seven children. John, Jeremiah, James, William, Robert, Peleg, Elizabeth.
2. James b date unknown m Ann Clarke d. 1756
3. Eseck, born 8 March 1679, m. 29 Nov 1705. Mercy, daughter of Caleb and Deborah Carr, the granddaughter of Caleb and Mercy Carr. W.B. Browne says: "He removed from Newport in 1715 to Swansea and lived on Gardner's Neck. His obiturary states that he was survived by 11 children, 112 grandchildren, and 129 great grand children. The first four children were born at Newport and the others at Swansea. All were born between 1707 and 1723. Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah, Eseck (had 19 children) robey, Deborah, Mary (or Marcy), James, Benjamin, Jeremiah, Daniel. His name is given as Esek or Eseck. He died at Swansea, Mass Dec 4 or 10 Dec 1772. Note: in this family, the youngest, Daniel, married his first cousin's daughter Ann, daughter of James and Ann Noyes Brown.
4. Clarke (Note: this son is given by some writers, but not in the Chad Browne Memorial)
