James was born in 1716 at Swansea, Massachusetts, the son of James Brown and Elizabeth Bowen[1].

James married first Rebekah Perry, daughter of David and Rebecca (Smith) Perry, on 27 July 1737 at Newman Congregational Church in Rehoboth.[1][2] Children:[1][3]

James appears on page 54 of "John Browne, Gentleman of Wannamoisett" by Benjamin William Brown - published 1951 "James Brown was appointed by the town of Barrington R.I. Mar 21,1774 one of the committee of correspondence "to attend to all that relates to the liberties of America" He was a member of Capt. Samuel Bosworth's Artillery Company and was one of the guard appointed by Col, Nathan Miller to serve on Rumstick for fifteen days. He lived in Nyatt, and a watch was kept at his house in order to give the alarm if any British vessels were seen approaching. He was a " gentleman soldier of the Senior Class" in 1781. Served as moderator 1770 at the first town meeting of Barrington. Was surveyor of Highways in Barrington in 1740, and Justice of the Peace. He was freeman at Warren, R.I. 1747 and Deputy Warren 1754, 1755 and 1762" (3)
