James Bryant (II) was of "Huguenot descent." His father Jacques Briand (James Bryant I) emigrated from England to Virginia before 1700 and settled in Manaintown, Virginia about 1703.

James Bryant II was born and died in Virginia: Birth: 1709 King William, Powhatan, Virginia, USA, Death: 1783 Chestnut Oaks, Powhatan County, Virginia, USA.

James Bryant II married Elizabeth Lefevre (correct spelling of last name) on 16 May 1732 in Powathan County, Virginia.

James Bryant II served in the Revolutionary War at Guilford Courthouse Battle, March 24, 1781, along with his brother, Isaac Bryant.

He was a large land and slave owner. A member of the Court and Secretary of King William Parish, Virginia. His home was located on Jones Creek near the mouth of Dutoy Creek in Powathan County, Virginia. He owned lands near Midlothian and Chesterfield Counties. During the Revolutionary War, coal was mined from these lands.

He was highly respected and an influential citizen of the section of Virginia.
