About James Canary

GEDCOM Note

James Canary was the sixth of the nine children of Martin and Mehitable Johnson (Blake) Canary, who later became known as McNary. James was the only one of the family to keep the Canary name afterthe family changed their name to McNary about 1800. The name, originally McKenery, was first known to have been MacNary, and then changed to Canary during the Revolutionary War period, because of trade troubles between the colonies and Great Britain. The change came about, according to tradition, when Martin's brother, a seaman carrying on a trade between this country and the West Indies and other foreign countries, was not allowed to reenter this country with his goods, because of his name. He was so enraged that he changed his name and entered by way of Canada, later bringing his cargo into Boston. Later, with Martin, they had the change made legal.

Land records in CT show the use of the Canary name and later, the McNary name being used. James Canary had settled in Perth, NY sometime about 1795, which was probably why he didn't change when the rest of the family did.

James met Fanny Cale, she later became his wife, at the time he came to take up his land in Gloversville (Perth) NY. She was on a visit to her grandmother Gaylord, who lived there. Travel at that time was rather difficult. They both rode from Gloversville in the same sleigh. At that time Gloversville was only a settlement of a few houses. James is said to have built the first frame house in that part of the country.

They were members of the Broadalbin (near Perth) Baptist Church, where James was baptized again in November of 1808, and became prominent in that church. James was known as "the old Colonel" by his descendants, and it was found that he was appointed a LT in 1806, in a regiment of the NY State Militia, organized in Montgomery County. He was a Captain in 1808, 1st Major in 1814 and Colonel in 1818.

A Colonel in the War of 1812. Possibly a caprenter by trade.
