About Mahitabel "Mabel" McNary (Johnson)

GEDCOM Note

Mabel Johnson's first husband was Richard Blake born April 23, 1738 in Middletown CT. (His name might have been spelled "Blague"). He fought in the French & Indian War with Martin McNary. Blake was the son of Stephen Blake and Abigal Hubbard. Martin came to Mrs. Blake with her deceased husband's belongings after he had been killed in the Army about 1762 and they thus developed a relationship and Martin married her on 28 September 1763. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Enoch Huntington, the pastor of the First Church of Christ, Cong' at Middletown, CT. From that time until his death he lived in Haddam, CT. Martin's son would later fight in the Revolutionary War. The name on his Sergeant's certificate was "Kenary." His son James always persisted in writing his name "Canary," but all his descendants now write it "McNary." The name was also written McKenery --- see the June 9th, 1785 letter.

Mabel and Richard Blake had a daughter, Mary, and before Blake died Martin promised him he would look after Mary. Apparently, after he married Mabel, he adopted Mary and did take care of her until she was an adult.

In the 1785 letter to Morris the last line of the letter is "My wife declines very fast and I am afraid she will not live but my children are all hearty and well. (J.M.B. note --- that seems a little strange as she would way outlive Martin --- I guess she recovered from whatever illness she might have been suffering in June of 1785).

Notes for Mabel JOHNSON

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1850 census, Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT page 330

Edward Johnson age 89 farmer b.
