Comments

There is no confirmed record for this man after his birth. The possible wife and child shown in the 1899 compilation (below and attached) doesn’t work out.

  • Enoch Cleveland had 3 sons and 1 daughter in birth records, but 2 sons and 1 daughter in probate records, 1729 - 1731.
  • Sons Jonathan and Enoch had wives and children on record after that date.
  • A “James CLELAND of Lyme” married Thankful Wilder in 1738. That man’s children were recorded as Cleland also.
  • There is no mention of “Cleland” as an alternative name for Cleveland (or Cleaveland) in Massachusetts Vital Records or the Cleveland Genealogy.
    • From “The genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland families” (1899), page 17: < Archive.Org > On old Woburn records the name is rendered Cleauland, 1648 to 1680, 1692; Cleiveland, 1648; Cleaueland, 1667; Cleavland, 1686 to 1697, 171 7; Cleaveland, 1701 to 1704; Cleveland 1702. In England, from a very early period, the name has always been spelled Cleveland, except in a few instances where it has been rendered Cleaveland and Clevland.
  • Possible son James” (born 1745) in Rhode Island. No member of Enoch’s family was in that area, but Josiah Cleveland was.
  • The Wilder family genealogy books make no mention of Thankful Wilder’s husband’s origins.
