James Minor Coffman, son of Jacob and Adaline Coffman, was born at Pruntytown, West Virginia, on July 31, 1856. When nine years of age he moved with his parents to Missouri where he lived nearly all his life and where he was married on December 22, 1878, to Anna Martha Hazelrigg.
To this union fourteen children were born, eight sons and six daughters, ten of whom grew to maturity. One son, Ralph L. Coffman, was killed during the World War in France on November 4, 1918.
Mr. Coffman, together with his wife, united with the Hopewell Baptist church at Barry, Illinois, and later they transferred their membership to the West Union church in Linn county, Missouri, where they were faithful members during the remainder of their lives.
Six years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Coffman moved to Englewood, Colorado, where they resided until September, 1931, when they came to Chariton to the home of their daughter, Mrs. Ada Elder, where Mrs. Coffman passed away on September 14, 1931. Mr. Coffman again returned to Englewood on March 10, 1932, where he died on December, 25, 1932.
His daughter, Mrs. Cora Webber, of Chariton, went to Colorado and was with her father during his last days. A son, Bryan Coffman, was also with him.
The body was brought to Chariton where funeral services were held at the First Baptist church on December 30, conducted by Rider S. L. Petrus, of Macon, Mo.
Mr. Coffman is survived by nine children, Mrs. Ada Elder, Mrs. Cora Webber, both of Chariton; Jacob W. Coffman, Willard, Ohio; J. M. Coffman, Mrs. Bessie Osborn, Mrs. Alice Hague, all of Chicago; Paul L. Coffman, Lincoln, Nebr.; Bryan P. Coffman, Englewood, Colorado; Kenneth D. Coffman, Grand Junction, Colorado. Five of these children were present at the last sad rites.
There are also nineteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three sisters, three brothers and many other relatives and friends.
He was always cheerful and happy and will be greatly missed. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."
