At the age of 18, James had a dispute with his neighbor, Jonathan Harding, that left his left arm permanently crippled. In his later years, he procured thousands of acres in what is now Dickenson County and at the time was one of the wealthiest men to live there. (So: Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow)
