About James Edward Corrigan, Sr

Intent to become a citizen, filed in Portage County, Wisconsin, signed on October 7th, 1857 states James was born in Ireland, on or about the year 1821; that he emigrated in August, 1844; and landed at Port Huron (Michigan). "STATE OF WISCONSIN COUNTY OF PORTAGE .....James Corigan...............Personally appeared before the subscriber, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, being a Court of Record, and made oath that he was born in........Ireland......on or about the year 18...21..., that he emigrated to the United States and landed at the port of......Port Huron.......on or about the month of .......August.......in the year of 18...44... that it is his bona-fide intention to become a citizen of the United States and to renounce forever all allegiance and fildelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to.......Queen of Great Britian.......whereof he is a subject.

James Corrigan Sr. was the son of Patrick Corrigan, Sr. and Rose Folun and the husband of Leath Russell. According to naturalization papers, filed by James in 1857 in Portage County, Wisconsin, James emigrated with his sister Margaret from Ireland to America in August, 1844. They landed in Port Huron, Michigan. They first settled in St. Clair County, Michigan. The two Corrigan siblings married two siblings, Leath and Reuben, from the John Russell family, also from St. Clair. James was a farmer. In 1846 James' father and brother also emigrated from Ireland to St. Clair County, Michigan. James and wife Leath had their first two children in St. Clair. In 1850 they moved to LaPorte, Indiana, where in 1851 Leath gave birth to son James, Jr. A year later they moved to northern Illinois and were there until 1856. Then they found a permanent home in Portage County, Wisconsin. From 1859-1873 they owned and operated "Corrigan's Saloon" in frontier town Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He died of typhoid fever. On 7 October 1857 in Portage County James filed his Declaration of Intention DI to be naturalized as a U.S. Citizen.
