Critical Commentary

It is claimed here that James Craig, here treated, was born at Inveresk in Midlothian on 20 April 1617. It should be noticed, however, that a baptismal record for James Craig cannot be found at Inveresk and Musselburgh on this date. Possibly he is the child of the same name whose baptism was registered there on 20 April 1612.

James Craig, here treated, is said to have married Agnes Mudie and to have had a son by her named John who was born in Edinburgh in 1644. It should be noticed, however, that the baptism of their son John was registered on 23 June 1644, at Inveresk and Musselburgh in Midlothian, and not at Edinburgh.

== Critical Commentary ==

It is claimed that James Craig and Margaret Peters had a son named John Craig whose baptism was registered at Inveresk in Midlothian on 20 April 1612. It should be noticed, however, that the name of John Craig's mother is not mentioned in his baptismal record. Moreover, the marriage and baptismal records of Inveresk and Musselburgh do not mention Margaret Peters.

A marriage record for James Craig and Margaret Peters appears not to have survived. However, James Craig and Margaret Peter (Not Peters) had a son named John Craig whose baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire on 18 April 1613. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Baptisms, reference OPR.644/1/1] John Craig is the only known child of this couple. They have no known connection with Inveresk and Musselburgh in Midlothian, or Dunfermline in Fife.
