From "HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY," Vol. I, pages 493-494.

Brant & Fuller, 1890.

James Curtis, one of the earliest settlers of the valley of the upper Ohio river, first came to the territory now known as Ohio county in

about 1780, and located a settler's claim for the Morgans, other early settlers, and one for himself, but in a short time, being a minor, he was driven from his claim. He then returned to his old home in the east, and there remained until 1786, when he came back to West Virginia with Edward Morgan. He brought his family with him, and in 1787, made his home on the land which has since belonged to

his descendants. James Curtis reared a family of ten children, nine of whom lived to be over eighty years of age. He himself lived to the age of ninety-one years. Salathiel Curtis, one of the sons of the above, was born in 1782. He became one of the prominent lawyers of Ohio and adjoining counties.

Ron, here is the response I received from my Okey cousin, who is also

descended from the Curtis line in question. I know that Liberty Curtis

from this line was a primary abolitionist in Franklin Twp, Monroe

County, OH. His tombstone in the Curtis Ridge Cemetery in Noble County has

a pair of clasped hands and the logo Friend of the Slave. I still do

not think this Nancy is the wife of the John Dailey in question. I will

let you know what I hear further from Carolyn. John

  • Forty years before his death he retired from the practice of law, and devoted much leisure to poetry, composing some very interesting poems, notable among which is one of considerable length, entitled, "The Colonists." The wife of this well-known gentleman was Mary Foreman, whose father, Reuben Foreman, owned originally all the site of West Liberty, west of Main street.
