Biography

The exact date of James Cutler's birth was probably between the 2nd and 8th of January, 1687. While the exact date is unknown, multiple sources state that he was baptized on Sunday, 9 Jan 1687 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay [1] [2], where his parents, Thomas Cutler and Abigail Dewey lived. [see Note 1] James Cutler died in Lexington on 16 Sep 1756 at the age of 69. His wife Alice died there six days later on 22 Sep 1756. [3] James Cutler is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Lexington, Massachusetts. [4]

Biographical Entry for James Cutler [5]

James Cutler (son of Thomas, grandson of James) was baptized at Watertown, January 9, 1687. He was licensed inn-keeper at Cambridge from 1718 to 1735, and died September 18, 1756. His son William of Cambridge filed an inventory of his estate, in 1757, amounting to £556 11s 6d. He married Alice

, who died September 22 1756, aged 57 [see Note 2] They owned the covenant at Lexington, April 17, 1715. [see Note 3] June 1, 1734, he sold to Samuel Johnson of Lexington 200 acres in Lancaster, for £100, and his wife Alice signed the deed. In 1742 and 1747, he made purchases of land in Killingly, Ct., and sold the same to John Felshaw, his residence being in Cambridge. Had children:

i. James, b. April 13, bapt. 17 April, 1715, at Lexington; d. at Salem, Feb 18, 1795, a. 80. [see Note 4]

ii. William, b. April 3, bapt. April 7, 1717, at Lex.; d. April 1 1781.

iii. Thankful, bapt. March 22, 1719.

iv. Robert, Rev., b. April 3 1721; died at Amherst, Mass, 1786.

v. Alice, b. Nov. 27, 1729; m. Ephraim Jones, Jr., of Concord, Mass., Nov 16, 1752; had four daughters and one son.

Notes

English parish registers as a general rule record baptisms rather than births. Although birth dates were entered during a brief period during the Commonwealth and, in certain northern dioceses in the later eighteenth-century, these were the exceptions rather the rule. In the sixteenth-century, the Anglican Church ordered parents to baptize soon after birth. For example, in the Prayer Books of 1549 and 1552, it was written that ‘The pastors and curates shall oft admonish the people that they defer not the Baptisme of Infants any longer than the Sunday, or other Holy day next after the child be borne, unless upon a great and reasonable cause declared to the Curate.’ Similarly, in the early seventeenth-century, William Gouge wrote that ‘it is not meet for Christians to defer the baptizing of their children beyond eight days.’ However, both Gouge and the later seventeenth-century Prayer Books allow for a short period of rest for mother and child. [6] An examination of Cutler family births and baptisms show that they appeared to be following the custom of baptizing their children on the Sunday following their births.
Vital Records of Arlington gives Alice Cutler's age as 67 when she died, not 57. This would make her date of birth to be about 1789 and her age as 25-26, not 15-16, when she married 28-year old James Cutler in 1715.
The term "owned the covenant" in this context means the two parties in marriage formed what was essentially a binding agreement with God and agreed to their individual roles as husband and wife that was binding for life. Not to be confused with the Covenant marriages that became available in Louisiana in 1997 and Arizona and Arkansas shortly after.
On April 17, 1715 in Lexington, James and Alice Cutler owned the covenant of their marriage and baptized their first child, James. This suggests that the couple may have actually been married several months earlier.
