James Davis, Sr. was born in 1682, in Surry county, Virginia a son of Thomas Davis (1658-1720) and Elizabeth Bagwell (1658-1746). He had 7 children with his unknown first wife.

In 1727, in Surry county, Virginia, James married, secondly, Elizabeth Warren, born 1686, in Virginia, a daughter of Thomas Warren, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth.
