Obituary of James Edward Willard ~ ?The Valley News? March 4, 1920 Lamont, OK Grant Co. The oldest man in Lamont and one of the oldest men in Oklahoma passed away when James Edward Willard died at his home Sunday, February 22. He was born July 26, 1827, near Buffalo, New York, and was age 92 years, 6 months and 27 days at the time of his death. His very long life as life is counted, spanning well nigh a century. [sic] At the time of his birth, western New York was still on the frontier. There were none of the modern conveniences. The first steam boat had not yet crossed the Atlantic, John Quincy Adams was the President of the United States and many of the founders of the country were still living. He witnessed the growth of our country from a small nation of a few millions to the strongest nation on the globe with a population of more than 110,000,000. In his day, all of the great inventions: the telephone, telegraph, electric light and the far-reaching discoveries in medicine and science, came into our daily life. Born on the frontier, always moving with the frontier to the west, his life was one of hard work. He was one of the type of men who made the West.
He was married to Ann Elizabeth Lewis, October 14, 1855. To this union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters; two dying in infancy, one daughter, Mrs. C. A. Dutton, preceded her father in 1893. Dr. J. F. Willard, J. B. Willard, W. E. Willard and Mrs. Ada Allen were present at his bedside.
His long life was spent in new countries. In 1872 he moved with his family to Howard Co. (now Chautauqua Co.) Kansas, where took up a claim. He lived there until 1888 when he moved to Rice County, Kansas, to care for his aged father who died in 1891. After the Cherokee strip was opened, he moved with his family in the spring of 1894 to a farm near Lamont. After a few years his increasing age compelled him to retire from the farm and to his home in Lamont where he lived until his death.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving companion, one sister, Mrs. James Allen, Of Lamont, five children, 21 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren and many friends. Change Date: 11 Jul 2005 at 09:04:01
