About James Evans
Was murdered in 1864 during the end of the Civil War. When called upon to pay a debt, he was offered Confederate dollars and was killed. In a letter from a grand-daughter "by word of mouth Grandpa Evans had several brothers, the only name I can recall was Bob. He visited them a[t] Shady Grove and Grandpa Evans chased him off for being too fresh with some of the help. I presume you know the details of his death (James) at the hands of Union sympathizers (drinking) for refusing to accept Confed money in payment for gold he had loaned them. Their names as I recall was McSpaddons. They were never prosecuted. I have heard of Aunt Emmie speak of Evans aunts who lived on the Nolichucky." Letter dated 1/18/1973 from Chattanooga, Tenn.
From the same letter: About the Cravens, This data by word of mouth from my mother and Aunt Emmie. "Sometime before the Civil War, James Evans and a friend rode horseback to visit his cousin Robert Cravens on Lookout Mt, His mother or wife was a Love from Greenville. James Evans mother was a Love, probably Lucy Love. Miss Lucy Cravens is still living here. The home is being preserved."
