James W. Gear
James William “Jim” Gear, 83, a former resident of Huttonsville and a resident of Colonial Place for the past three years, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at Colonial Place.
He was born Oct. 31, 1921, at Huttonsville, a son of the late William Roy Gear and Ona Elizabeth Hayes Gear.
On July 5, 1942, at Elkins, he was married to Mary Ruth Phillips Gear, who preceded him in death Feb. 3, 2002. Surviving are two sons, Charles Glenn “Charlie” Gear and wife, Chris, of Glenmore and Phillip Lane “Phil” Gear and wife, Cindy, of Huttonsville; and a daughter, Margaret Steinruck of Hudson, Fla. Ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.
Two brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Mr. Gear was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the engineering division of the U.S. Army. He was a maintenance supervisor at the Huttonsville Correctional Center for more than 30 years prior to his retirement and a member of the Huttonsville-Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department for more than 32 years, where he served as fire chief for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and trapping and working in his shop.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville. Members of Tygart Valley Post No. 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion will provide full military rites at the grave. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice Care Corp., 629 North Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241 in memory of Mr. Gear.
