James W. Gibbs

Mr. James W. Gibbs, 77, 1932 Jackson Street, Augusta, Georgia, entered into rest at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 1909, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Barton's Chapel, Dean's Bridge Road with the Rev. E.W. Marks officiating. Interment will be in the Barton's Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Gibbs served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War and was a member of Company F, 17th Battalion Georgia Volunteers, under Captain Hood of Augusta and in Company B, 12th Battalion Georgia Volunteers. Served from May 13, 1862 to March 25, 1865, when he was shot and captured. His Company under Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Eliza Lavinia Camp Gibbs; three sons, A.J. Gibbs, and R.S. Gibbs of Augusta, and J.E. Gibbs of Grovetown, Ga.; one daughter, Miss Lizzie Gibbs of Augusta, and other relatives.
