James Gifford of Sheriffhall, here treated, is the son of James Gifford of Sheriffhall His sister Elizabeth married James, 2nd Lord Douglas of Dalkeith The Scots Peerage VI: 353

On 22 May 1441 he was appointed curator to his brother-in-law by the government of James II, King of Scots, The Scots Peerage VI: 352 who gave him full power to administer the Dalkeith estates for the space of nineteen years. RMSRS, A.D. 1424-1513: 562 On 10 May 1482, following the death of his brother-in-law, there was a full reckoning between the Laird of Sheriffhall and his nephew James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton when his iintromissions with the Dalkeith estates were honourably discharged, and the Laird of Sheriffhall, in view of a sum of money given to him, bound himself in manrent and service to the new Earl. Thomas Butlar, bailie of George, abbot of Dunfermeling, gave sasine to James Giffert, younger, son and apparent heir of James Giffert of Shereffhalll and Egidia Tod, his spouse. of the lands of Sherefhall, in the regaloty of Dunfermeling and lordship of Mussilburgh. Done at the chief messuage of the lands, namely at the door of the hall thereof. Witnesses: the said James Giffert, elder, William Furd or Goldsmyth, Francis Peblis, burgess of Edinburgh, Robert Tedy, John Giffert, William Giffert, George Thomsone, Robert Pttonsone and John Sallirman, cursor.
