Notes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glass-3337

There is a long tradition of Native descent among my father’s ancestors. including applications to the Dawes Roll of descendants of James S. Glass. James’ grand-daughter, Julia Ann Glass, applied in 1896, was admitted, but her application was later overturned, A Lawson, another grandchild of James applied after 1900 and the commissioner stated on the application that he believed Lawson had proved his Native descent but he was inexplicably not admitted to the Roll.

The tradition is that Tag Glass fathered James S. Glass with Sallie Swofford, out of wedlock, and took the child from the mother to Arkansas to be raised among the Cherokees there. When James approached adulthood, he returned to East Tennessee and sometimes acted as a Cherokee interpreter with government officials.

http://www.powwows.com/final-roll-of-the-cherokee-nation-and-freedman/ It appears that since Thomas Glass had a Cherokee wife when he had a son with Sallie Swofford, this may have led to overturning the enrollment of Julia Glass, the granddaughter of James Swofford Glass, the illegitimate son of married Thomas Glass. It may also explain the inexplicable Lawson rejection.

Ancestry in recent ethnicity revisions now shows 1% Native Ancestry for me. I note there are current genealogies for Ta’wahidi through his legitimate wife, but not through Sally Swofford, with whom he had an adulterous relationship.
