About James "Seamas" Gunn of Ulbster
brief biography and family
Also referred to as the "Knight of Westford".
Sir James Gunn was the son of Niall Gunn. He was born about 1360. His effigy is believed to be displayed on a flat stone in Westford, Massachusetts. Although highly questioned, the Gunn family crest was identified in the 1950s on the effigy in stone. It was identified by a royal Scottish official. The expedition was supposed to have taken place in 1398 and it was around this time that the knight would have died. In 2015 the effigy was encased in a steel and plastic frame, since it has been heavily weathered since the 1950s when it was rediscovered and unearthed. Researchers have speculated that Sir James Gunn is the likely traveling companion of Sir Henry Sinclair who led an exploratory expedition in the late 1390s.
