About James H McCutcheon
James H. McCutcheon was born in Augusta Co., VA, bet. 1760/1765, married in Augusta Co. about 1788, to Elizabeth (Hunter). Their first four children were born in VA. They removed to Kentucky about 1796 where the rest of their children were born. They moved again, evidently about 1810 or 1811, settling in the Wabash River area of IN. It is known that James fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe. By 1815 he had lost six of his horses, stolen by Indians, and the family was constantly harassed by Indians. James felt that his family was in danger of being massacred so the family packed up and left, intending to return to Kentucky (or Virginia). They stopped for a visit in Floyd Co., IN where his brother William had settled in 1806. James liked the area and remained there. A few years later they were joined by another brother, Samuel Sanford McCutcheon, who had married a cousin, Frances (McCutcheon). It has been published in the "History of Ohio Falls Counties" that William came to Floyd Co. in 1806 with his sons, Samuel and James? --Alma Spragg
