About James Hamilton of Stanehouse

JAMES HAMILTON OF STANEHOUSE

James Hamilton of Stanehouse is the son of James Hamilton of Stanehouse and his wife Agnes Maxwell. He reached the age of majority in 1626 which suggests that he was born in 1604 or 1605. He was served heir to his deceased grandfather in the baronies of Broughton and Stanehouse on 3 June 1635. In 1654 James Hamilton "stylit of Stanehouse" is mentioned in the registered testament of Robert Hamilton of Milburne as having been indebted to him. Robert Hamilton of Milburne had a charter for the barony of Stanehouse, from which charter it appears that the barony was apprized from the late James Hamilton of Stanehouse by David Mitchell, merchant in Edinburgh, on 8 July 1636, and sold by him to Milburne. Hamilton Memoirs, p. 385
