Born in Scotland and baptised at the United Presbyterian Church Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom on April 13, 1798 then moved with his parents to Armagh, Armagh, Ireland as an infant where his parents gave birth to 6 more brothers and sisters with all but one leaving Ireland for Canada by way of London, England around the 1830 to 1832 time frame. James then left Canada for Vermont where he settled in as a farmer there until his death in 1866 after his wife had left him about 1856 and he sold his farm to his brother in law shortly before his death on Sept 8, 1866

In a property transfer of 31 Aug 1866 in Westmore, Vt it was stated that he sold to his brother-in-law, Henry Bowman, his 50 acre Henderson farm in Westmore for $2 and care the rest of his natural life.
