The second set of pension application papers contains a "proof of service" paper signed by wittnesses J.R. Gilkeyson and B.J. Ball, which states that "James was a Confederate soldier belonging to Company D, Hawthorn's Volunteer Infantry. That as such soldier he served from the spring of 1862 to October 1862. That he (took sick the first of October) died in said service October 16, 1862 and did not desert the same." Dated 25 June, 1891. Company D was organized at Benton, Saline County, Arkansas on June 17, 1862. James and his wife, Sarah, were first cousins, and were living near Hiram Hogue in Belfast, Calvert Township, Saline County in 1860.
