James F. Hubbard, a son of Henry and Margaret Hubbard of Langham, Rutlandshire, England. He was the youngest of eleven (seven)* children. He first arrived in America about 1637, and settled at Charlestown, MA. In 1643 he moved to Long Island, NY, along with several other families who held religious beliefs contrary to those who ruled the Massachusetts Bay Colony, (Anabaptist: Baptism during adulthood after confession of faith, instead of in infancy). Anabaptist means Again Baptized. Among these migrants were, Lady Deborah Moody, her son Sir Henry Moody and Ensign George Baxter. These four were granted land on 19 Dec 1645. James surveyed this land and laid out Gravesend and parts of Hempstead. He is alleged to have been a man of "great respectability and influence." He also owned 176 acres at the head of Fresh Kills, on Staten Island. He is off times referred to as "Sergeant" and was their “Scout (Sheriff).” "Kills" is the river around the Isle of Meadows western Staten Island, NY. Rutland means “Rota’s Land.” *Old English” “Leaven means seven.” L is a tall S. DAR mistakenly listed him as the eleventh child.[2]
