After marrying Elizabeth Hinds in the Registry Office at Coleraine Londonderry Northern Ireland and having two children James Alexander in 1863 and Matilda in 1864 they moved to Lanarkshire in Scotland c1865 where James worked as a Grain Store Labourer and Grain Weigher. They had another six children in Scotland before they sailed to Australia on the Bombay in 1885 leaving from Greenock Scotland.
Their final child Margaret was born in NSW. In New South Wales James worked as a Watchman in charge at Anthony Horderns in Sydney,

In 1901 lived at 118 Ferris St Annadale with 3 other males and 3 females according to 1901 census.
Purchased Terrace Houses at 90 and 92 Ferris St Annandale NSW from the builder Robert Shannon on a rent to buy arrangement. The Hunters owned 94 Ferris St.
Later bought and lived at 222 Albany Rd Petersham NSW.
Dr C H Northcott was the Doctor attending on at death on 20 Feb 1915.
