About James Johnstone of Westeraw

Having sold his lands in Lanarks and bought Glendoning.1 OF WESTERHALL.1 In 1605 Dumfriesshire (later called Westraw or Westerhall).1

James Johnstone of Westerhall inherited his property in Pettinain in 1580. In 1595, he made a mutual settlement of their estates with his brother, Sir James Johnstone of that ilk. He sold his lands in Lanark and in 1605 he acquired Glendoning, Dumfries, afterwards called Westraw or Westerhall. He had married Euphemia Oliphant, the daughter of 4th Lord Oliphant, by 1599, and when he died in 1633, he was succeeded by their son, James Johnstone of Westerhall. (2)

"Matthew de Johnstone, the second son of Sir John above-mentioned, was designed Johnstone de Westerhall, or Westraw, by charter from the crown, and to him succeeded John, his son, in 1491, who was father of Herbert, who was succeeded by James, his grandson, in 1555: to him succeeded James, his son, in 1580, the father of another James ...
