About James Kerr, IV

James Kerr was born January 29, 1788, at the headwaters of Eno River in Orange County, North Carolina. He died August 23, 1859, in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, and was buried at the Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas. He married Nancy Ross who was born February 7,1788, in Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina, and died December 27, 1865, in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.

Parents: James (1754-1818) & Nancy Mitchell Kerr (dates unknown), also of Orange County, North Carolina who transferred to Spring Hill, Tennessee, and died there. They are buried in the Jackson College Cemetery. James with a marked stone and his wife Nancy in an unmarked grave.

James Kerr was born at the headwaters of Eno River in Orange Co., North Carolina. He migrated about 1818 as a young man to Maury County, Tennessee, bringing his young family and later purchased land on Fountain Creek near Culleoka. He had studied law, tutored by his maternal grandfather, Squire Andrew Mitchell, who was a lawyer and planter in North Carolina, owning land adjacent to the Kerr property. Squire Mitchell was also a rural magistrate. James took up the practice of law and a Maury County history record reads, "James Kerr, Gentleman, produced in Court a license to practice law in the several courts in Tennessee and was qualified, May 16, 1826." In 1835 he was a Trustee in the formation of the Pleasant Grove Academy in Culleoka, Tennessee. On 28 April 1840, he bought land In Lawrence County, Tennessee, and moved there. In 1851 he moved most of his family on to Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas where he lived with his family the remainder of his life and is buried here in the Oakwood Cemetery.
