About James Law
James Law, popularly referred to now as "the Staintondale smuggler", who was fatally shot in 1823, in Staintondale, just outside Fylingdales, to thesouth. There had been much smuggling in the neighbourhood, and much informing, and the shooting followed accusations and threats made during a night of drinking in Scarborough. There was so much feeling in the locality that a move to have the case tried out of the county had to be checked by the appointment of a jury of West Riding men. William Mead was found guilty of manslaughter.
