By trade and occupation he was a stonemason and continued his residence in the Blue Grass state until 1810, at which time he moved to Kentucky.(This information is taken from "Gaston's Centennial History of Oregon pages 530 & 533 from Portland Public Library) Also according to this publication James was born in North Carolina, Jan 23 1807; the family removing from N. Carolina to Kentucky in 1810. By trade and occupation he was a stonemason and he continued his residence in the Blue Grass state until 1840, at which time he moved with his family to Platte Co, Missouri. Here he remained until 1851 and in that year emigrated to Oregon, crossing the plains with ox teams, the long journey requiring 130 days to complete. Having arrived at his destination, he secured a donation claim of 320 acres 8 miles SE of Silvereton on Waldo hills. Here he established his western home, being occupied alternately at his trade and in the development of his farm, until the time of his death, at age 80 years. He married at age 17 on 28 November 1824 to Margaret Spurlock, a native of Virginia she was born 9 January 1808 and was 16 years of age when married. She lived to the exceptional age of 91 having given birth to 10 children including their son Jesse H., who crossed the plains with his parents at the time of their emigration to Oregon in 1851.) (This information needs to be reconciled with the following information copied in 1953 from records of Herb and Hiram Starns taken from their grandmother's , Hannah (Snethen) Lewis's bible. James Lewis was married to Sarah Couch, her father was Jonathan Couch famed in American History, as one who fought at the side of General Washington. Sarah Couch's daughter was Polly (or Mary) Couch who married Daniel Boone, the famed frontiersman. I think that these records are probably a generation off, or William and Jesse H. Lewis recorded here may be cousins.
