Lilly, James Sr.---Private , Company E. listed as "James Lilly, Sr." and "James J. Lilly" called (James W. Lilly in various family files), enlisted on 8/21/1861 at Jas. Brammer's Mercer County,(West) Virginia---1860 MCC, age 54, farmer, married to Nelly, age 47, son of Franklin County, Virginia natives, Edmond Lilly and Edith Meador Lilly, Married to Prunella Mann in February 1830 in Giles County, Virginia. Enumerated on the 1850 Census of Mercer County, (West) Virginia, age 45, farmer, married to Prunella, age 37,. Arrested in Mercer County, (West) Virginia on 1/23/1862. Imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio. "Died on July 12, 1862 at Camp Chase, Ohio, Chronic diarrhea. Received Aug 31, 1863, Certificate # 2479. " Although this man is considerably over the age of required militia service, some compelling evidence suggests that this particular "James Lilly" is the soldier on the roster of the 151st Virginia Militia. A diary entry made by future U.S. President, Rutherford B. Hayes of the 23rd Ohio infantry, dated July 30, 1862, says:

Rode with (Lieutenant James L.) Bottsford over to see Mrs. Lilley, an old lady whose husband, James Lilley, lately died at Camp Chase in prison. Her son James is still there. As the only male member of the family old enough to do work, I am inclined to ask for his release. Her daughter, Emily, a well-appearing young woman, is accused in giving the information which led to bushwhacking Captain Gilmore's cavalry. I hope it is not so.

Lilly was originally buried in the City Cemetery, southeast of Columbus, Ohio and later interred in Camp Chase Cemetery. He is buried in grave 2086, row 41, number 47. Listed as a member of the 151st Virginia Militia, but evidence suggests he may have been more of a political prisoner than a prisoner-of-war. Father of John W. "Big John" Lilly. Father-in-law of Granville H. Hogan.

James Lilly fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War in Company E, 151st Regiment, Virginia Militia. He enlisted on August 21, 1861 in Mercer Co, VA (now WV). He and his son, James Jr., were among 9 men from Company "E" captured by Federal soldiers on January 23, 1862 in Mercer Co, VA (now WV). He was sent to Camp Chase Prison in Ohio, where he died of Chronic Diarrhea on July 12, 1862.
