James Lindsay 5th Earl of Balcarres gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Navy. In 1715 he joined his father in the Rising of 1715 acted with great gallantry and was then pardoned. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 2nd or Royal North British Regiment of Dragoons (Scots Greys). He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Lindsay of Balcarres [S. 1633] on 25 July 1736. He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Balcarres [S. 1651] on 25 July 1736. He succeeded to the title of 5th Lord Lindsay and Balneil [S. 1651] on 25 July 1736. He fought in the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 where he commanded a squadron. He fought in the Battle of Fontenoy on 30 April 1745.
