John D. "Blacksmith" (Donald, Norman) MacNeil, Piper's Cove married Mary Ann (James "Lieutenant") MacNeil, Grass Cove (see 258). After residing elsewhere for a time, he settled on the property of his father-in-law in Grass Cove, Here he built a forge and continued his trade of blacksmith for many years. He was interested also in politics and was Councillor for District No. 18 for a number of terms. When the Gypsum Plant was built in Grass Cove in 1914, he built a combined home and general store at the juncture of the Gillis Point and St. Columba highways. Thus he provided a general store for the community and a boarding house for persons working in the plant. His family was: James, Daniel, Maria, Maggie, and Eliza. After the death of his wife, he married a MacNeil woman from Boisdale. 259
