About James Mathewson

James Mathewson

James Mathewson came from England to the Colonies, and located at Plymouth, MA. He was an early settler of Providence, RI and bought land there about1658, living there until his death. James arrived 22 years after Roger Williams, who was the first settler. James is said to have first been at Plymouth, MA, and then went to RI to avoid religious persecution. " Thomas Angell of Providence sold unto James Mattason a five acre lott lieng on the East Side of the land which Thomas Clement now liueth upon bounded on the East with the land of Benedick* Arnold on the North with the Sea as is manifested by deede under his hand."

  • This "Benedick" is Benedict Arnold Great Grandfather of the "traitor" Benedict Arnold. In Jan 27, 1658 he bought of Thomas Angell 5 acres on east side of Thomas Clemence land. In Feb 19, 1665 he had lot 92 in a division of lands. Will of James Mathewson, proved Oct 17, 1682. Executrix was wife Hannah. To son James, 120 acres. To son Thomas 41 acres. To all sons equally my share of land beyond Seven Mile Line. To son Zachariah and the child unborn, if it be a son, my house, and certain land, but if it be a daughter, then all to remain with son Zachariah. To wife all movable goods and cattle at her disposal for daughters. Inventory; £85, 10s., viz.: 20 loads of provender, Indian and English corn, household goods, cattle and swine, £65, 10s, &c.

Hannah Field?s great grandfather was the eminent astronomer John Field, who introduced into England the Copernican system, in 1557, against the opposition of scientists of the day. (See Field section)

"July 28, 1703, Hannah (Field) (Mathewson) Brown, widow of James Mathewson, 1, and Henry Brown, 2, gave receipt for movable estate, cattle, etc. to Richard and Joseph Brown, the two sons of her late husband, to whom she had committed the office of executor to which she had been appointed, she not being acquainted with the duties. She had no children with Henry Brown.

James Mathewson, the immigrant ancestry, may have been the James Mathews or Mathewson who was in Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1634, and in Yarmouth prior to 1639; was constable of Yarmouth 1639-40, and on a list of those able to bear arms at Yarmouth in 1643.

James Mathewson settled in Providence, Rhode Island, as early as 1658. He was an early settler of Providence arriving there 22 yers after Roger Williams. He went to Rhode Island to avoid religious persecution in Massachusetts. He bought land there of Thomas Angell, 27 Jan 1658, and of John Brown, 24 Feb 1668. He was deputy to the assembly in 1680. His will was dated 24 Aug 1682, and proved 17 Oct 1682.

He married Hannah, daughter of John Field, she married second, Henry Brown and died in 1703
