About James Edward McCulloch

James Edward McCulloch was born 1873 in Montgomery County Virginia to Benjamin and Elizabeth McDonald. After attending Randolph-Macon College in his home state he finished his Bachelor of Divinity at Vanderbilt University. While still in Tennessee, J E McColloch wed Minerva Anette Clyce of Warren County Missouri in 1903. Miss Clyce had been schooled at the Scarritt Bible and Training School and was a leader in the new idea of “social evangelism”.

McCulloch authored multiple books during his career starting in 1905 with “The Open Church for the Unchurched”- “The Mastery of Love” in 1910- “Challenge of Social Service” 1913- and in 1919 his acclaimed “Distinguished Service Citizenship”. His most famous work is from 1924 titled “Home: The Savior of Civilization”. This book has the famous quote, “...no other success can compensate for failure at home”.

J E Mcculloch and his family settled in the greater Washington D C area and for many years he was a friend and confidante to many of Washingtons Congressmen and Senators. He passed away in 1939 with his family close and successful. His wife Minerva survived him to a ripe age of 92 years, and saw great-grand children before passing peacefully in 1967.
