Last Will & Testament of James McKee, Dec'd

In the name of God, amen, October Eighteenth one thousand seven hundred and ninety, I, James McKee, late of Huntingdon County, Township of Dublin and State of Pennsylvania now in low state of health but in sound judgment and memory, considering the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make this my last Will and testament, that is to say, first of all I recommend my soul unto the hands of God who gave it and my body to the dust, to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner and my worldly estate I dispose in the manner following, viz:

It is my will and I hereby order all my debts and funeral expenses to be paid out of my estate and further I bequeath to my beloved wife Elisabeth McKee the use of one hundred acres of land during her life, two mares and two sucking colts, two cows and their keeping summer and winter, and all the household furniture save the copper gallon and one four square table, and the sowing of half a bushel of flaxseed in the best ground, to be pulled and made fit for the hackle, and to my well beloved son James McKee, all my lands and the use of one hundred acres of land for his Mother during her life, his riding horse and one young black mare, three years old, one Copper Gallon and one square table and one young bay mare, two years old, and all the farming utensils and the remainder of the horned cattle to be at the disposal of Elizabeth McKee and James, her son, and to my well beloved daughter Mary Clark, one heifer two years old and four dollars to buy each child a Bible. And to my well beloved daughter Elisabeth Bigart one tea table, one chest, six chairs, six pewter plates, three pewter dishes.

And likewise, I do constitute and appoint Elisabeth McKee, my well beloved wife and James McKee, my son, to be executors of this, my last will and testament, and I do hereby renounce, revoke and disallow all other wills and testaments and do publish, pronounce and declare this and none other to be my last will and testament. /s/James McKee (Seal)

Huntingdon County ss:Before me the subscribed Register for the Probate of Wills and granting Letters of Administration in and for the County of Huntingdon, personally came the above named James Coyle and Mathew Taylor who, being sworn according to law, did depose and say they were present and did see and hear the above and within named James McKee sign, seal, publish and declare the within instrument of writing as and for his last will and testament, and that the said James at the time of such signing and sealing was of sound and disposing mind and that they subscribed their names thereto as witnesses in the presence of the said testator and at his request. /s/James Coyle /s/Mathew Taylor (X-his mark) Sworn and subscribed this 15 Oct 1791/s/Andw. Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA Sec.20 Lot45 has the following dates: James McKee b.1755 d.1834, wife Elizabeth (last name not recorded on marker) b.1769 d.July 1809. This Elizaberh may be Verner.

The center stone in this lot reads "In memory of Thomas McKee born in Co. Antrim, Ireland died in Harrisburg, Pa. in 1770 and is buried in Paxton Cemetery" However, later in the genealogy I have there is a son of James named John listed as having a 1st. wife names Rachel Verner. Maybe you can make sense of this. It seems James was married to an Elizabeth and John (1783-1831)was married to Rachel Verner

Thomas McKee, son of Alexander McKee, born in Ireland about 1695 came to America with his father about 1735. Farmer and Indian Trader. Died in 1769 at McKees Half Falls. Children of Thomas McKee;

  • a) Alexander McKee, a natural son by an Indian Mother, born about 1738. Indian agent and Tory, fled to Detroit in 1778, married an Indian woman and had one son THomas. Died on THames River grant, Ontario, Canada in 1799.
  • b)Catherine McKee, a daughter by his legal white wife Mary, whose maiden name is unknown. Catherine married WIlliam Graydon and by him had one daughter, ELizabeth Graydon.

"Omitting the Preamble, I bequeath to my son, William McKee two hundred acres of land including the house and all the improvements where he formerly lived, likewise I bequeath to my son James McKee, the plantation I now live on with all the Improvements belonging to it with all my personal Estate,

I likewiseBequeath all my right and Title to that plantation in Westmoreland County and Hempfield Township to him to wit. the place for__ belonging No. John Davis. I Likewise bequeath to my daughter Rachel Dickson a tract of land formerly belonging to Thomas Batterton with all the improvements belonging to it; and I make and ordain my sons William and James whole and sole Executors of this my last will and testament for the intent and purpose in this my will contained, in witness whereof I the said, James McKee have set my hand and seal this 20th day of July 1777."

Signed Sealed and Delievered by the said James McKee as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who were present at the signing and sealing thereof.
