ames L. Meadows, former CN advertising chief, dies
James L. Meadows, former advertising manager for Charleston Newspapers, died Saturday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, after a long illness. He was 74. Meadows retired in 1986 after 33 years with the newspaper company. He began his career in 1949 as an advertising salesman for Beckley Newspapers and came to work at the Charleston Gazette as an ad salesman in 1954. In 1970 he was named classified advertising manager for Charleston Newspapers and was promoted to advertising manager in 1977. He retired in 1986, and later retired with his wife, Betty, to Tampa, Fla. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1949. Also surviving: daughters, Cynthia Lou Grant of Washington, D.C., Frances Meadows and Cathy McCreary, both of Tampa; son, James L. "Rusty" Meadows of Washington; sisters, Louise Doss of New Bern, N.C., Mary Evelyn Abbott of Madison; brothers, Harold Ray Meadows of Madison, Leroy Meadows of Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren. Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Boone Memorial Park, Madison. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
