James Merrill married Mary Adams November 23, 1714 in Newbury, Essex Co., MA, daughter of Robert Adams and Rebecca Knight She was born March 5, 1699/00 in Newbury, Essex, Mass, and died Unknown in Falmouth, Cumberland, Me. They lived in Newbury until 1725 when they moved to Stratham, New Hampshire, where they lived until 1738. They then moved to New Casco, also known as Falmouth, Maine.

James owned a large farm on the northeast side of the Presumpscot River, which he bought from Gen., Waldo. In 1739 he was admitted to the First Church in Falmouth, and was selectman several years from 1741. He made his will Apr. 6, 1753: it was proved Oct. 2, 1757 where he is styled "gentleman." The house of James Merrill had been a garrison house and it was said to have been built in 1714. It was 3/4 of a mile east of Presumscot Falls. It was occupied by Adams Merrill and other Merrill descendants until 1878 when it was torn down by Horton Page. [3]
