About James Kerr Moore

Moore started the J.K. Ranch in 1872. During the 1890s Moore leased 100,000 acres of land and grazed 2,000 head of cattle and many horses.

J.K. Moore’s home and store were located on the military reservation. As Indian trader Moore bought furs and robes and offered many items for sale, including ammunition, flour, and tobacco. Moore had several different business interests besides his official trading duties. He built and ran the Fort Washakie Hotel and Livery Stable. Moore owned a ranch on which he raised cattle and horses, and he started a general store in the nearby town of Lander.

Moore’s store served as a general meeting place for the Native Americans, settlers, and soldiers. In 1887, he enlarged the store and included for the soldiers a billiard hall and saloon. Moore’s home was at the center of many civilian activities, including hosting President Chester A. Arthur during his 1883 visit to the reservation.

According to James K. Moore, Jr., “Washakie was a great friend to my father. They would sit for hours in the store. Father always gave Washakie a can of fruit or crackers after these sessions. Father never forgot the gift.”

During the 1870s, Moore branched out from his businesses on the reservation and purchased a store in Lander, Wyoming, shown here. He added the sloping additions later. Moore sold the business in 1905 and it became a restaurant and hotel.

Unsure about when the army would close Fort Washakie, Moore began buying land in California by the late 1880s. By 1906 he had sold his business interests in Wyoming and moved permanently to California where he and his family grew grapes, peaches, and other fruits. Moore died in 1920 and his wife passed away in 1935. J.K., Jr. served as the Indian trader on the reservation until he retired in 1920. Another son, Charles, owned the CM Ranch near Dubois, Wyoming.
