Biographical Summary

"James, second Earl of Annandale, was served heir to his father 30 March 1641, and upon the death of Mungo, second Viscount of Stormont, succeeded, in terms of the limitation of the patent of the title, as third Viscount of Stormont, in March 1642...

...James, Earl of Annandale, married Jean Carnegie, eldest daughter of James, second Earl of Southesk. Six months after her first husband's death, 14 July 1659, this lady married David, fourth Viscount of Stormont. She died in March 1671. Lord Annandale's titles of Earl of Annandale, Viscount Annan, and Lord Murray of Lockmaben became extinct upon his death, whilst those of Viscount of Stormont, Lord Scone, and Lord St. John of Torphichen in the County of Perth, devolved upon David, second Lord Balvaird."

"(405) James, second Earl of Annandale, died s.p. 28th December 1658. He was served heir to his father 30th March 1641. On the death of Mungo Murray, second Viscount Stormont (No. 126), in March 1642, he succeeded under the special remainder as Third Viscount Stormont. He married, contract dated 26th June 1647, Jean Carnegie, daughter of James, second Earl of Southesk, who died March 167 1. At his death the Earldom of Annandale, Viscounty of Annan, and the Baronies of Murray of Lochmaben and Tynningham became extinct, but the Viscounty of Stormont devolved on David, second Lord Balvaird (No. 137)."

Succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Murray of Tynningham [S., 1625] on 22 September 1640.
Succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Annand [S., 1622] on 22 September 1640. Succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Annandale [S., 1625] on 22 September 1640. Succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Murray of Lochmaben [S., 1622] on 22 September 1640 Succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Scone [S., 1604] in March 1641/42 Succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Stormont [S., 1621] in March 1641/42. Held the office of Steward of Annandale on 17 November 1643. In August 1645 he joined the army of Montrose, and subsequently retired to England. Godman writes that he was "by no means nice as to whom he sold his influence, or from whom he took money, he rapidly acquired one of the best estates in Scotland." On his death, the Earldom of Annandale, Viscountcy of Annand and Lordships of Murray of Tynningham and Murray of Lochmaben became extinct.
