James Olmstead is the eldest son and first born child of James Olmstead and Hannah Coleman. He was born in 1730 on the family farm on Olmstead Hill Road in the Town of Wilton, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.
In 1754 he married Sarah Trowbridge whose family was also from Wilton. They have seven children: James, Seth, Isaac, Azor, Seth, Sarah, and Aaron.
After Sarah's death in 1788, James married Sarah Patchen in January 1789, the widow of Elias Morehouse from neighboring Ridgefield. They had one child, Alfred born later that year.
He died on September 20, 1807, on his farm in Wilton.
His will is dated 15 February 1805 and proved on 2 November 1807 in Norwalk. He mentions his wife Sarah, and his children, James, Seth, Aaron, Sarah, and Alfred, and his grandsons, Daniel, Osborn, and Alden (sons of his son Isaac).[1]
His inventory was recorded on 4 January 1808 in Norwalk.[2]
In 1808, his estate distribution was set out to James (eldest son), Seth, Aaron, Sarah (only daughter), Alfred, and the sons of Isaac (Daniel, Alden, and Osborn).
